Before he was recruited by the university Orville Towers recorded an outstanding career in football and basketball at St. Charles High School. He lettered in both sports plus baseball as a Bulldog between 1931-35. Mr. Towers earned All-MIAA football honors in 1934 as an end and was an All-Conference basketball forward and team captain for the 1933-34 season. In 1935 he was the recipient of the Stickler Cup awarded annually to the outstanding senior. After receiving a B.S. degree from the university, he was awarded a B.S. degree in 1937 from University of Missouri-Columbia and an M.D. in 1939 from Washington University. During World War II, he was a captain in the Army, receiving the Victory Medal, the Commendation Ribbon and the American Defense Medal. The war had interrupted his medical career, which he started in 1940 at St. Joseph Health Center in St. Charles. During the time he was on the medical staff at St. Joseph, he served several stints as chief-of-staff. Altogether Dr. Towers served as a general practitioner in St. Charles for more than 40 years, delivering more than 8500 babies. Dr. Towers founded the Boonslick Medical Clinic and helped found the St. Charles Boys Club. In 1972 he was named "Man of the Year of Boys Town of Missouri." He was a member of many professional and civic organizations. Dr. Towers retired from his medical practice around 1977 and died in January of 1987.
