Dale Collier transferred in the spring of 1960 to this university from Southern Illinois-Carbondale where he had played football. As a Bulldog he competed in track field events and in football as a center. He was forced to give up the gridiron sport in the fall of 1961 after suffering a fractured skull. He competed four years in track setting the school and the MIAA indoor and outdoor records in the shot. He earned All-American honors in 1963 by placing third in the shot and fourth in the hammer at the NCAA College Division Championships. During his track career he was a member of teams that won 54 dual meets in succession. After graduation in 1964 he was assistant track and football coach at Ladue High School in St. Louis for 17 years. He groomed nine state champions in the shot and discus and was offensive line coach for six state playoff teams. Following that, he went to Kirkwood High School where he was head football coach and athletic director. In 1986 he was named Sporting News Coach of the Year in St. Louis and Post-Dispatch and Suburban Journal Coach of the Year. He has been an officer in the National Athletic Directors Association and past president of the State Coaches Association, Metro Coaches Association and several other athletic directors associations.
