Between 1944-48, Bob Lawrence captured a number of accolades at Roosevelt High School in St. Louis, including Outstanding Basketball Player. He enrolled at the university and became a key performer on the Bulldog football and basketball teams. Mr. Lawrence won second-team All-MIAA football laurels and was one of the top scorers on the basketball team. He was one of the top high jumpers in MIAA track. As a senior he was selected for the Stickler Cup. After graduation in 1952 he was drafted into the Army and was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood. Mr. Lawrence played on the Fort Leonard Wood Army basketball team and he was also on the All-State College Team that was affiliated with the Army. One night in January of 1953 the Army team played the Globetrotters in Kiel Auditorium in St. Louis. On the way back to Fort Leonard Wood after the game, the car carrying Mr. Lawrence was struck by another car head-on. He and five other passengers were killed in the accident.
