Steven Powell, a graduate of Kirkwood High School in St. Louis, entered the university in 1974. He led the football Bulldogs in rushing all four years of his career and led the team in scoring three times. He finished sixth as a junior and second as a senior among NCAA Division II rushers and was eighth in scoring nationally in 1977. He ended his career with 3,643 rushing yards, including highs of 1,372 yards in a season and 247 yards in a game. Mr. Powell was a two time, unanimous first-team All-MIAA selection and the conference's MVP in 1977. He was an Associated Press honorable mention All-American in 1976 and American Coaches Association first-team All-American in 1977. He also participated in track. Mr. Powell was drafted in the seventh round of the professional draft by Buffalo and played several years in the NFL. He also performed several years in the United States Football League for New Jersey and in the Canadian Football League for Saskatchewan and Hamilton. After retiring from pro football in 1984, he worked for the Missouri State Highway and Transportation Department.
